What is the Smart Freeway System?

The Smart Freeway System on Kwinana Freeway is a system of technologies used to manage the flow of traffic. The technology used is the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to improve traffic flow, road safety and travel times.

The technology utilizes data, sensors and automated systems to manage such things as the flow of traffic, efficient use of infrastructure while reducing congestion and improving safety.

Overhead signs provide guidance to road users such as opening and closing lanes depending on travel flow or incidents. Traffic lights are installed at freeway on-ramps to control the flow of vehicles merging onto the freeway.

Electronic message signs along the freeway provide real-time information to drivers, such as updates on traffic conditions, travel times, lane closures, and incidents ahead.

CCTV Cameras and Sensors: ITS technologies such as CCTV cameras and traffic sensors monitor the freeway in real time, detecting incidents like accidents or vehicle breakdowns.

The Smart Freeway section includes emergency stopping bays at regular intervals. CCTV monitoring ensures that if a vehicle stops in one of these bays, traffic operators are alerted and action is taken as needed.

Real-time travel time updates on variable message signs inform drivers know of expected times to reach key destinations, such as Perth City.

Future investment in Smart Freeway technology will follow, with plans to extend the system to other parts of the freeway network, continuing to improve traffic management and the overall efficiency of Western Australia’s road network.
